Maintaining these different aspects in a healthy manner all directly contribute to recovery.
  • Non-linear – Recovery is not a step-by-step process, but rather a process characterized by continuous growth, inevitable setbacks and continued learning
  • Strengths-based – Recovering addicts should focus on recognizing and valuing their various strengths and abilities to continue succeeding in recovery. Along with valuing their strengths and abilities, recovering addicts should focus on building up these strengths to continue growing.
  • Peer support – Mutual support between peers is an essential aspect of recovery, because people can share and learn from the experience of others through supportive relationships
  • Respect – The community, society, systems and self must emanate respect so that the stigma and discrimination of addiction are destroyed and so recovering addicts can fully experience every available support method
  • Responsibility – Recovering addicts are personally responsible for their own care and recovery, which means they must utilize and develop their coping strategies
  • Hope – The single most crucial component to recovery, as it is characterized by believing that change is possible and that recovery can be reached
